it hasn’t even made $1 million yet, but “the cove” just had a titanic week for the cause … the doc that we’ve hyped features eco-activists & many from the global surf community taking on japanese police, fishermen & the grisly business of dolphin hunting in taiji … and “the cove” just had its best week ever.
thursday, word came that the film will be shown in 5-20 cinemas in major japanese cities in may-june … and that’s MAJOR news … featured former dolphin trainer ric o’barry says, “when the film is seen in japan, it will shut down ‘the cove’ permanently.”
and on sunday, “the cove” won the oscar for best documentary … here’s abc video of that moment.
as surfer magazine’s zach weisburg wrote sunday night, “While the award cements dolphin slaughter as a controversial topic under public scrutiny for years to come, tonight’s events seem to make one thing much less debatable. This may be the first and only movie to win an Oscar that features surfboards and real surfers doing something they’re passionate about.”
