i decided i'm gonna use this forum to deem something a 21st century classic every month and post it here ... everything from films to books to albums to tv shows ... one criteria: it's gotta be out for 10 years ... only then can we tell if something has the staying power to be knighted "classic" status. and since we're almost in april now, i'm gonna post three more in the next coupla weeks so that i get caught up on this time continuum for 2010, okay? that said, here's 21st century classic #1: "almost famous" not only do i love this film because it's the story of my life (yes, i am william miller, lol), but it is just pure brilliance--from the writing to the acting to the directing to the music, you name it ... best movie about rock-n-roll ever made. you could put the needle on any part of the film and hit a great scene. "i'm flying high over tupelo, mississippi, with america's hottest band ... and we're all about to die." best magazine lead in the history of magazines ... and it's not even from a real magazine article ... such is the screenplay of "almost famous" ... such is ...

julienne davis of sophisticated savage could record "noon in fresno" and i would play that song on an endless loop ... she could sing "8 a.m. in santa cruz" and i'm so there ... but she recorded "midnight in l.a." and thus that is the song that is eternally stuck in my head after hundreds of listens ... so now it'll be stuck in yours ... and that's a good thing. and make sure you sample sophisticated savage's smoothness at iTunes.

9 years ago i wrote about a bunch of young gorillaz who had caught my ear, invaded my brain and were about to take over the u.s. with their animated look and otherworldly sound (the "gorillaz in our midst" real edge magazine feature is on the bottom of this post). 15 million albums sold later, it's great to see that success has not gone to their cartoonish heads ... because the gorillaz' 3rd studio album "plastic beach" (out today) is their best yet. listen to all of "plastic beach" here & say amen, y'all ... "AMEN!" as you know, jack johnson is undoubtedly my favorite musician, but it's also safe to say that the gorillaz are my favorite 21st century band--with their ever-evolving-eclectic collabo of creative characters. and one day, when u2 decides to pass the mantle on to the next greatest rock band on planet earth, bono's gonna have to find out how to enter this virtual world where damon albarn & jamie hewlett existentially exist. bbc's mark beaumont writes: The Plastic Beach back story – colourful fluff about cyborg bassists, kidnapped singers and islands made of trash – might make you think the whole cartoon band conceit is wearing a bit thin. ...
