The Math That Shows Tim Tebow Is A Top 5 NFL Quarterback

Tags: advanced stats, nfl, statman, tim tebow

My new favorite NFL box-score statistic for quarterbacks is a thing called TOUCHDOWNS-PER-TOUCH. It basically shows you who the big playmakers are out there. The formula is simple: (Pass TDs + Rush TDs + Reception TDs)/(Passing Attempts + Rushing Attempts + Receptions). I was curious where Tim Tebow ranked among his peers so I ran the numbers from the 2010 season through the current 2012 season through Week 14 (as of 12.12.12). Here are the percentages for all qualifying QBs (rookies must have minimum of 130 touches; sophomores must have 290 touches; veterans, 450 touches). 1. Aaron Rodgers … 6.94% (1585 touches) 2. Tom Brady … 6.56% (1692 touches) 3. Drew Brees … 5.94% (1903 touches) 4. Peyton Manning … 5.24% (1203 touches) 5. Tim Tebow … 5.23% (554 touches) 6. Robert Griffin III* … 5.18% (463 touches) 7. Cam Newton** … 5.10% (1138 touches) 8. Russell Wilson* … 5.01% (399 touches) 9. Matthew Stafford … 4.95% (1395 touches) 10. Tony Romo … 4.86% (1316 touches) 11. Eli Manning … 4.83% (1676 touches) 12. Matt Ryan … 4.77% (1760 touches) 13. Philip Rivers … 4.76% (1659 touches) 14. Andy Dalton** … 4.73% (1035 touches) 15. Michael Vick … 4.54% (1344 touches) 16. Matt Schaub … 4.53% (1368 touches) 17. Jay Cutler … 4.49% (1202 touches) 18. Ben Roethlisberger … 4.46% ...

john hollinger is a genius (so far)

i'd been wondering for awhile how adjusted plus-minus team projections would stack up with expert opinions ... so before the season started, i put together an extensive apm team projection preview based primarily on three-year apm scores and playing-time percentages ... and now that we're almost a month into 2010-11, i am now here to compare how my apm predictions are faring against espn's 93 best basketball minds, espn's foremost projection expert john hollinger, along with kevin pelton's schoene predictions. and sad to say--even though the season is far from over--hollinger and espn's consensus opinions both are beating my apm numbers ... i determined this by using my give-or-take-5 grading system on pace wins versus projected wins to see who is projecting best ... and that analysis gave me the following tallies (like golf, low score wins): hollinger, 69; espn, 82; apm, 97; schoene, 131. next question is, how did i determine these following pace-win totals? well, by combining actual 2010-11 records (so far) with each team's simple rating system score ... with that, i was able to put together a master key to serve as an unbiased source to grade our projections against, using these current season numbers as pace win ...

nbamazing … 2010-11 adjusted plus-minus projections … VID

Here’s my attempt at an unbiased look at the upcoming NBA season, using my 3Score version of time-weighed three-year adjusted plus-minus numbers—based on the one-year and two-year numbers posted by Aaron Barzilai at his website BasketballValue.com—as a predictive element for the 2010-11 campaign. Adjustments may have been made for players on the rise (24 and younger) or on the decline (32 and older), but these exceptions all had to meet certain criteria for the pre-determined increases or decreases. When adjusted plus-minus numbers were not available for limited role players, I used raw +/- numbers from Roland Beech’s 82Games.com, with most of these players being marginalized in the deep bench section of each team. For rookies, I used various college/overseas plus-minus tools and advanced statistics metrics, along with John Hollinger’s Draft Rater, to properly place collegiate and foreign rookies in pre-determined slots where past rookies graded out in APM. For team playing-time assessments, I started out with a three-year average as a base score for everyone, trying to keep that number fixed for most top rotation players, while making adjustments as needed for second-stringers and such. Adjustments were also made for players on the rise, players on the decline and players who would have ...

spurs illustrated … last gasp

down to last breath ... so, while grasping at straws, trying to find hope, came across this. there is ONE san antonio spurs' lineup that is working against the phoenix suns: it's their best five, tony parker-manu ginobili-richard jefferson-antonio mcdyess-tim duncan. when MR ATT is on the floor (manu, richard, antonio, tim, tony) in 28.25 minutes of this three-game series so far, the spurs have outscored the phoenix suns, 74-55 ... that's a +39 score translated to 48 minutes (26 possessions for/ 28 against) ... and that's against nash-jrich-hill-amare and either frye/collins, for the most part. that same spurs' lineup of MR ATT is the No. 1 unit of all teams in the 2010 nba playoffs, with an adjusted plus-minus of +28.12 ... it's even better than cleveland's best of mo-parker-lebron-jamison-varejao (+25.14). of the other spurs' 8 combos that have gone 5+ minutes in this series against the suns, this is the only one that has worked so far. so my suggestion: play MR ATT for 48 minutes sunday night at the AT&T Center!!!, lol ... just kidding ... hill, bonner, blair, mason & bogans will be just as key to any victory. happy to help ... love ya, steve nash. love ya, grant hill ...
